Full Description

A large quantity of Romano-British pottery found in 1977, during field walking by Naomi Field. {1}{2} Further small scale excavation was carried out by the North Lincolnshire Archaeology Unit in 1979 to investigate a stone wall uncovered while ploughing. Three phases of development were identified, the earliest being four roughly parallel gullies which ran down to the River Bain about 50m to the north. Two of the gullies were sealed by an oven, or perhaps a corn drier, and a second oven was excavated to the east of the first. Over lying the first oven was a small rectangular walled structure that was infilled with rubble and may be the base of a third (unfinished) oven. Roman pottery dating from the 3rd and 4th century was recovered from the site. This is part of a large Romano-British settlement in this area to the west of Ludford and may be related to the extensive Roman remains found to the east of the village and south of Ludford Grange (see PRN 40610). {3}
