St Peter's Church, Asterby is a small Early English structure. {1} A parish church which is now redundant. It has mid 14th, late 15th, early 19th and late 19th century features. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2}{3}{4}{5} During new drainage works in 1997, the excavated trenches revealed the foundations for an earlier building beneath land north of the existing vestry. It is possible the foundations are the remains of the demolished north aisle. Foundations located halfway along the nave probably belong to the earlier structure unless the aisle was divided into two chapels and the foundations represent an internal dividing wall. It is possible that stonework in trench five was an external wall and that the foundations represent the west wall of a north transcept. The presence of a transcept that predates the 13th century raises the possibility that a church of some status existed on this site. {6}
