Description

ASTERBY CHURCH LANE TF 27 NE (north side) 6/2 14.9.66 Church of St.Peter G.V. II* Parish church, now redundant. Mid C14, late C15, early C19, late C19. Green sandstone rubble blocks, limestone ashlar dressings, red brick. Slate roofs with stone coped gables and eastern cross finial. West tower, nave with truncated north aisle, chancel. Late C15 west tower, truncated, re-roofed and altered in the early C19. 2 stage angle buttresses flank west doorway with pointed head, wooden door frame and plank door. C15 rectangular window above with 2 pointed lights and hood mould. Moulded string course above. Bell openings in east and west stone coped gables, early C19, with semi-circular heads and shuttering. North side of nave with 2 western bays of 4 bay north arcade removed and patched with early C19 brick. Lean-to aisle to east with 2 late C15 rectangular windows, one with single light, the other with 2 lights and mullion. East end of chancel with late C19 pointed window with 3 pointed, cusped lights, geometric tracery and hood mould. South side of chancel with late C19 pointed window with 2 cusped ogee headed lights and mouchette. Gravestone re-set to left, to Simon Meen, died 1741. South side of nave with early C19 brick eaves with early C19 semi-circular headed doorway, partially blocked to form a fixed window, with C14 stone head at apex. Pointed mid C14 window, restored in C19, to left with 2 ogee headed cusped lights, mouchette and hood mould. Lean-to rendered brick buttress to left with curved triangular shaped window, probably early C19, with rendered surround and fixed glass. Church interior with early C19 pine west gallery with Doric pilasters and fielded panelling. 2 mid C14 bays of north arcade with octagonal pier, polygonal responds and double chamfered heads with 2 human heads in spandrels. C14 chancel arch with polygonal responds with moulded capitals, and double chamfered, pointed head. C19 choir stalls with poppy head finials. C19 polygonal wooden pulpit with bold reliefs of Christ the Shepherd and the apostles. Ornate C19 lectern and chair. C19 pews and tie beam and wagon roofs. Listing NGR: TF2639079514
