Full Description
BAUMBER MILL. PROBABLE SITE OF EXTINCT HAMLET OF BAINTHORPE.{1} THERE IS PROBABLY A LOST VILLAGE OF BAINTHORPE IN THE PARISH OF BAUMBER. THE PROBABLE SITE IS ON THE WEST OF THE RIVER WHERE THE MILL IS. THE MONKS OF KIRKSTEAD HAD A MILL THERE. NOTHING SEEN AT THIS SITE ON AIR PHOTOGRAPHS, BUT TRACES OF CONSIDERABLE EARTHWORKS ARE VISIBLE AT AREAS TF21757392, TF22557442 AND TF23127446. C W FOSTER'S AUTHORITY IS AN UNDATED GRANT FROM A CARTULARY OF BRIDLINGTON PRIORY WHICH MENTIONS LAND '... BELOW BAINTHORPE IN BAUMBER PARISH...' LINCS ARCHIVE OFFICE HAVE NO REFERENCE TO A VILLAGE OF BAINTHORPE. THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS OF DESERTION IN THE VICINITY OF THE MILL. THE EARTHWORKS VISIBLE ON AIR PHOTOGRAPHS CONSIST OF DRAINAGE, MINOR CROFTS, OLD FIELD BANKS AND QUARRYING.{2} MEDIEVAL SILVER RING INSCRIBED WITH ILLEGIBLE RELIGIOUS OR MAGICAL MOTTO IN LOMBARDIC LETTERS. FROM DMV OF BAINTHORPE.
