Full Description

40264 St Margaret's church, Langton is a miniature greenstone (sandstone) church, with just a nave and chancel. {1} The original church on the site was medieval, and the north wall shows the existence of a late thirteenth century arcade. The foundation of a wall was found 6 feet north of the present wall, and an earlier chancel was also discovered some 8 feet beyond the eastern chancel wall. It was restored in 1750 and 1890-91. {1}{2} During renovations in 1969 the plaster was removed in parts of the nave wall, and over the pulpit brickwork was revealed (possibly internal brick cladding). The foundations of an 8 foot tower can be seen on the outside of the west wall. {2} The church contains some tomb slabs by the door and a medieval 'chrismatory', found at Poolham Hall, Horsington. The font has been put together from several pieces. The foot is a keystone of a Norman rib-vault from Kirkstead Abbey, and the bowl is either a late medieval kitchen mortar, or the bowl of a font from the former church of St Lawrence, Horncastle, said to have been discovered while taking down three cottages in St Lawrence Street. {1}{2}{3} The church is still in existence and has a corrugated iron roof. {5} A parish church with architectural features surviving from the mid 13th and 15th centuries and 1750 and was restored in 1890 to 1891 by W. Scorer. It was constructed of green sandstone rubble blocks with limestone ashlar dressings and some red brick and has plain tile roofs with overhanging eaves and a bell supported by a timber frame in the west gable.
