Full Description

St Leonards’ Church built in the 13th century, but restored in 1913 to 1914. This must have been the chapel 'ante portas' of Kirkstead Abbey.{1} Capella extra portas of Kirkstead Abbey fine 13th century building contains an effigy of a knight in a great helmet and chain mail. The font appears to be a large reused domestic mortar. {3} A former chapel to Kirkstead Abbey, now a parish church, dating from 1230 to 1260 and restored in 1913 to 1914 by Weir. It was constructed of limestone ashlar and squared coursed rubble and has a plain tiled roof with a timber bellcote with a shaped leaded roof. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4} On the floor in the chapel is a Purbeck marble effigy of a knight. The figure is armoured with a mail hauberk and has lost its legs below the knees. The knight is holding a long shield although the top half of the shield is missing. It is the earliest such effigy in Lincolnshire and can be dated by the carved stiff-leaf foliage and square shoulders to about 1250. It is one of the few figures in the county wearing a flat-topped helm. The identity of the knight is not known. {5}
