Full Description
PRN 34621
There is a scatter of pottery all over the site. There are several dark patches where burnt material has been ploughed up. The site is cut by the modern River Glen. South of the river, outside the survey area, extensive cropmarks are recorded. {1}
Excavation was undertaken as part of the Fenland Management Project in two areas. Trench A investigated THU 3 and Trench B investigated THU 4. Trench A contained a ditch and a series of gullies, a deep pit or well and a further pit containing a complete ceramic vessel with an animal bone laid across the rim, both of which appeared to have been deliberately placed. No evidence of former contents or function was found under analysis. Fills of some of the gullies were ashy and burnt, with abundant charred plant material. The function of the deep pit/well appears to have necessitated entry into the pit - a series of three steps had been cut into the eastern side, with footholds bolstered by stone stairs, two of which were still in place. One of these stairs was a reused millstone grit quern. Pottery recovered from features in Trench A dated from the late first to second century. Trench B contained further ditches and gullies. Pottery from this trench dated from the late first to early third century. Environmental sampling included charred plant material thought to be fuel residues from industrial processes. An open landscape with some trees and shrubs in the catchment was indicated. Animal bone comprised equid, sheep/goat and possible cattle.{2}
