Full Description

A HOLY WELL (CHALYBEATE) IS MARKED ON BOTH THE 1956 6' AND 1985 1:10,000 OS MAPS - INSIDE THE MODERN EXTENSION TO THE CHURCH YARD. {1}{2}~ A Grade II Listed well dating from the 12th century with 19th and 20th century alterations. It was constructed of fragments of limestone ashlar, rubble and cobbles with some cement, on an oval plan. It is a central round well with an underwater stone culvert to the south. There is an oval cobbled area around the well and two ascending steps of weathered architectural ashlar fragments. To the south a rectangular 'plinth' supports traceried ashlar fragment. The well is possibly connected with the cult of St. Gilbert, whose Gilbertine abbey was several hundred yards to the south. {3}
