Full Description

In early September 1979 aerial photographic reconnaissance revealed a round barrow adjacent to Long Plantation. The site was visited in January 1980, and three concentrations of cremated bone and sherds of two early Bronze Age vessels were identified. The pottery comprised a rim sherd of a 'Yorkshire Vase' food vessel, and four sherds from a small collared urn, probably belonging to Longworth's Primary Series. 23 flint flakes were said to have been recovered, although the source of this information is not certain. {1}{2} The South Kesteven record cards record that 'surface finds comprise 1 rim sherd 'Yorkshire' type food vessel. Also a number of newly broken sherds of Secondary Series collared urn. Cremated bone also present on surface. Two sherds 'Billingborough type' pottery. 7 flint flakes.' These finds are probably the same as those found in January 1980. {3}
