Full Description

PRN 34067 A LARGE SITE WITH A PROMINENT MOUND WHICH IS STILL UNPLOUGHED AND UNDER GRASS. ARTEFACTS WERE RECOVERED FROM THE SURFACE OF THE GRASS AND FROM EXPOSED PATCHES OF GROUND. AS WELL AS ROMAN POTTERY FINDS INCLUDED FIRED CLAY, BURNT STONE, MILLSTONE GRIT (QUERN?) AND ANIMAL BONE (SHEEP). {1} THE MONUMENT INCLUDES THE SITE OF AN IRON AGE SALTERN AND SETTLEMENT OF IRON AGE AND ROMAN DATE. THE LARGE MOUND IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE SITE IS CONSIDERED TO HAVE BEEN CREATED DURING THE PROCESS OF SALT MANUFACTURE IN THE IRON AGE AND ROMAN PERIODS AND SOME OF THE NEARBY GULLIES AND PLATFORMS MAY ALSO RELATE TO THIS PROCESS. FINDS FROM ON AND AROUND THE SITE INCLUDE, IN ADDITION TO POTTERY, FRAGMENTS OF FIRED CLAY OF A TYPE WHICH FORMS THE CHARACTERISTIC DEBRIS OF THE SALT EXTRACTION PROCESS.
