Full Description

A THIN, HETEROGENEOUS FLINT SCATTER ON SKIRTLAND. FINDS INCLUDE PEBBLE CORES, BLADES AND REWORKED (PREVIOUSLY PATINATED) ARTEFACTS. 62 FLINT FRAGMENTS WEIGHING 0.45KG. {1} SOME FLINTS (SMALL CORES AND BLADES) ARE PROBABLY NEOLITHIC; THE REWORKED FLINTS WERE IMPLEMENTS WHICH HAD BEEN DISCARDED, PERHAPS IN THE NEOLITHIC, AND HAD AQUIRED A SLIGHT PATINA. AT A LATER DATE, POSSIBLY EARLY IN THE BRONZE AGE, THEY HAD BEEN FOUND AND REWORKED, CUTTING THROUGH THE PATINA INTO FRESH FLINT. THE FLINT SCATTER WAS FOUND ON A SLIGHT RIDGE ON THE FEN-EDGE, AND AIR PHOTOGRAPHS EXAMINED SINCE THE SURVEY HAVE REVEALED TRACES OF DITCHES AND A POSSIBLE ROUND BARROW NEARBY. {2}~, AREA 2.25H, HTM 3M
