Full Description

PRN 33889 Enclosure, excavated by Grimes 1942-3. Contained post holes, hearths & stone building. A round headed stone from window suggests C12 date, Site obliterated by airfield. {1}{2} I do not think the camp is any other than medieval. Enclosure is irregular with W side only straight, the bank is about 6 paces wide & 2 feet 6 inches high. The ditch is about 5 paces wide & varying depth, greatest on NE side where it is still wet. At the SW side a rubble of large stone is showing in the bank. At SW corner there are strong foundations showing c3 feet thick. 12 The building is 14 paces by 8 paces, the whole is covered by grass & there are fair signs of foundations in other parts of the enclosure. Entrance at NW corner. Outside there are traces of other enclosures.{1} During a site visit to Twyford wood, no sign of the Moated site could be found, although the South Kesteven Community Archaeologist has recorded that the site is readily visible.{3}
