Full Description

To the north of the church is the site of Bitchfield Hall, the home of the Clarges family. The field is still known as Hall Close. A date of construction for the hall is unknown but it appears to predate 1568, and was eventually demolished in the 19th century. {1} A desk based assessment {2} in 2022 recorded earthworks on the site which are also present in LIDAR data {3}, although it is uncertain whether they relate to the former hall, or medieval settlement in the area (MLI34203). A geophysical survey also in 2022 {4}{5} recorded several truncated rectlinear features in the approximate location of the hall, but as with the earthworks it is uncertain whether they represent former hall features, of trends associated with the medieval settlement. The geophysical survey report presents the tithe map of 1842 and no hall is visible in the location of the possible features.
