Full Description
Possible site of a Civil War battle or skirmish at Red Hill, to the north-west of Ingoldsby. Very little is known about this action, however, and Phillips was of the opinion that it may be apocryphal. {1}
The 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map marks the site of this battle as having been fought between Royalists and Parliamentarians in 1655. This date seems to be incorrect, however, given the English Civil War was largely over by 1649. It may instead refer to a small skirmish, thought to have taken place somewhere near Ingoldsby in August 1644, when a Parliamentarian raiding party was able to capture some of the Eastern Association's suplies. {2}{3}
White Directory of 1782 makes reference to the finding of several human skeletons in 1855, 'in a field called Redhill, west of the village, where, according to tradition, a battle was fought.' The date of the human remains is unknown, and it is unclear whether this relates to the possible Civil War skirmish, or to unrelated burials. {4}
