Full Description
Former grammar school, founded in 1669, and built in 1673. It was funded by Charles Read of Folkingham, who left a sum of money for the establishment of free grammar schools at Tuxford in Nottinghamshire, and here at Corby Glen. The building was extended in 1691, and has minor 18th century alterations. It is constructed of ashlar stone and squared limestone rubble, and has a steeply pitched, sprocketed and hipped Collyweston slate roof with lead dressings and finials, and a central four-shafted ashlar ridge chimney stack with moulded base and cornices. The former school layout had the main rectangular front part as the schoolroom, with the slightly later master's house added to the rear right. The former schoolroom is single storey, but with attics and basement. It has a five-bay front with rusticated quoins, chamfered plinth, moulded eaves, and pulvinated frieze carrying the inscription 'CAROLUS READ GENEROSUS HANC SCHOLAM DIS... GNATAM FUNAVIT ANNO DOMINI 1673'. The central, projecting two-storey pedimented porch is dated 1691 and inscribed with 'Robert Kirke and Hugh Wade, Wardens'. The added rear wing is of coursed square rubble with ashlar quoins, and features a Collyweston slate roof with raised stone coped gable and axial ashlar chimney stack.
The building was restored in 1965 by the architectural firm of Bond and Read. This restoration was funded by the Earl of Ancaster, who converted the structures into a Library and Art Gallery, as a memorial to his only son Timothy, who was drowned at sea. The buildings are now known as the Willoughby Memorial Library and Art Gallery.
