Full Description

The churchyard at the Church of St Michael and All Angels is clearly defined by earthwork banks on its northern and eastern sides. The southern and western boundaries are defined by retaining walls that are contemporary with the paving of the adjacent roads. These walls are at a much lower level than the northern and eastern boundaries, however, and may point to similar banks having existed here previously. The banks have been thought to be of Saxon date, and possibly defined the extent of an entrenched camp. {1}{2} The churchyard at the Church of St Michael and All Angels is depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. The church it serves has its probable origins in the late Saxon period (see PRN 33665), and it is possible that the churchyard dates to this period as well. {3}
