Full Description
Roman iron smelting site, excavation in 1961 in Blind Eye Quarry. Three shaft furnaces were exposed standing at intervals of about eight feet in a line running north to south and facing east. One was destroyed and two excavated. Excavation began in September 1960 after signs of a furnace had been disclosed by quarry operations. The shaft furnaces were about 10 feet in diameter and 30 inches high, built og baked clay with hearths. A small quanity of pottery, a large quantity of slag and a working floor were found. Three post-holes and a domestic hearth suggest a shelter nearby. {1}{2}
