Full Description

STOW WAS A HAMLET WITH A CHAPEL AT THE TIME OF THE DOMESDAY SURVEY. WHEN THE CHAPEL (CHURCH?) WAS TAKEN DOWN, ABOUT 1781, THE MATERIAL WAS USED FOR BUILDING A BARN, AND THE BELL WAS TAKEN TO BARHOLM CHURCH. THE WALL FOUNDATIONS OF THE CHAPEL COULD BE SEEN ABOUT 1816 IN A FIELD CONTIGUOUS WITH THE WEST DEEPING-STOW AND LANGTOFT-STOW ROADS. INSCRIBED GRAVESTONES HAVE ALSO BEEN FOUND IN THE SAME FIELD. NO TRACES OF THE CHAPEL FOUNDATIONS WERE SEEN IN 1965. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
