Full Description
STOW, 'ESTOU' IN THE DOMESDAY SURVEY, WAS A HAMLET OF ABOUT 600 ACRES, WITH A CHAPEL. THERE WERE TWO HOUSES REMAINING ABOUT 1816. WHEN THE CHAPEL WAS TAKEN DOWN, ABOUT 1781, THE MATERIAL WAS USED FOR BUILDING A BARN, AND THE BELL WAS TAKEN TO BARHOLM CHURCH. THE WALL FOUNDATIONS OF THE CHAPEL AND OTHER BUILDINGS COULD BE SEEN ABOUT 1816 IN A FIELD CONTIGUOUS WITH THE WEST DEEPING-STOW AND LANGTOFT-STOW ROADS. INSCRIBED GRAVESTONES HAVE ALSO BEEN FOUND IN THE SAME FIELD. APs SHOW TRACES OF DESERTION AT TF106110. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
THE INDICATED AREA WAS UNDER PERMANENT PASTURE AND CONSISTED OF A SMALL FIELD SYSTEM WITH SOME AMORPHOUS TRACES OF DESERTION. NO TRACES OF THE CHAPEL FOUNDATIONS WERE SEEN IN 1965. {1}
