Full Description

A brickyard was started at Uffington in about 1830, which was probably the Lindsey Estate brickyard. It was in production in 1845 and still supplied clay to the Stamford terracotta works of J. M. Blashfield in 1870. It was abandoned by 1919 and had probably been disused for many years. The unweathered brick produced by this kiln is a soft but fairly bright red which was certainly used for the orangery at Uffington House in 1845. The postulated connections with Blashfield's date from as early as 1839. {1} Inspections were carried out in 1980. At that time the kiln survived in a small copse as four brick walls minus a roof. The north and south walls contained loading entrances. Brick built, it made use of the remaining stone buttresses of an earlier kiln. The external measurements for the rectangular kiln were 25 feet 8 inches by 17 feet. The internal firing area being 18 feet 4 inches by 10 feet 6 inches. Six flues survived each side, the walls in part remaining 10 feet high. One small brick workshop remains; it is single storey with a pantile roof having been converted at some time to farming use. Part of the interior fireplace remained although the chimney stack has been demolished. To the east can be traced the partially back-filled clay pit of the original brickyard. West are more extensive pits partly returned to farmland. Finds from the kiln included bricks and terracotta objects. {2}{3}{4} An 'old kiln' in the copse to the south of Casewick Lane, to the north-east of Uffington. {5} Some earthworks may survive but visibility on the photograph is low because of the scrubland and wooded areas. {6}
