Full Description

PRN 33519 Remains of a medieval building were found at a site for a new house situated on the gravel terrace of the river Welland, alongside the old Stamford Canal. The machine-cut trenches 3 foot 6 inches deep revealed a heavily burnt site. One trench contained badly mutilated stone footings with traces of the burnt timber sill. Another trench crossed what once had been the central living area. This section produced Stamford ware cooking pot bases, and bones of cattle, pig and horse. The remains suggest a fire-damaged building, certainly whilst in occupation. Information supplies on 26 May 1980. {1}
