Full Description

PRN 33496 The ploughing of a field in Horse Marsh in February 1960 produced a scatter of fourth century Romano-British pottery in two concentrations. At these two points the plough, which had gone a little deeper than usual, also turned up gravel, and a further gravel spread unaccompanied by pottery was noted in the adjoining field at TF104085. Examination of vertical air photographs of the field revealed faint cropmarks which were difficult to interpret. {1}{2}{3} In 1965 the finder confirmed the approximate area of the finds. The Welland Valley Archaeological Research Committee field officer had also picked up second and third century pottery from the area. {2} A series of extremely well-defined cropmarks, suggesting irregular enclosures, was photographed from the air by Jim Pickering in 1962. {4}{5} The cropmarks were mapped by RCHME in 1960 in 'A Matter of Time'. They appear to indicate a grid of ditched trackways with an enclosure or field boundary at the junction of three trackways. St Joseph aerial photographs of 1952 show these as distinct cropmarks. {6}{7} The cropmarks may not be associated with the Roman pottery finds. {8}{9}
