Full Description
A Romano-British farming site and evidence of pre-Roman occupation was first revealed by digging in 1956 in Pollard's gravel pit; since partially excavated. Pre-Roman finds from the site were an Iron Age 'A' sherd, a few worked flints found in plough-soil, four Bronze Age pits (report forthcoming) and at TF108097, a mid Acheulian palaeolith associated with vertebrae, possibly of red deer. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}
The palaeolithic hand axe from the gravel pit is in the possession of D. Peacock. An interesting group of middle Bronze Age pottery came from a pit, about 5 feet across and 2 feet deep, containing animal bones and dark soil. Since this appears to have been a rubbish pit, the pottery must presumably consist of domestic wares. Cord impressed wares were completely absent. {4}
