This record now includes record PRN 20293 which has now been deleted.
A Romano-British or Iron Age dug-out boat carrying sling stones, found in 1839 in Deeping Fen. It was 46 feet (13.8m) long, with a maximum width of 5 feet 8 inches (1.7m). {9}{10}{11}
In 1877 Skertchly records 'the Langtoft canoe was found about the year 1850 on a farm belonging to Mr Whitfield who described it to me as being hewn out of a single oak trunk, the marks of the axe being clear on the inside and outsideā¦48 feet by 4 foot 6 inches. Nothing was found inside save a few pebbles. This interesting relic was burnt because it cumbered the ground'. {2}{3}
A canoe hewn from a single oak tree with a keel and eight cross ribs (Fox group IIIc) was found in 1839 in Deeping Fen, 31 inches below the surface. It was 46 feet long, stern 5 foot 8 inches, and was filled with clay, at the bottom of which were about fifty small stones. Skertchly records the finding at Langtoft about 1850 of a canoe, 48 feet long and 4 foot 6 inches across the widest part, made from a single oak trunk. Nothing was found inside except a few pebbles. Marshall refers to both finds and says that although the dates and dimensions differ he cannot but think that the same canoe is intended. Langtoft is close to Deeping Fen, both accounts refer to the content of the oak trunk as of 650 cubic feet, and the mention of pebbles in both is suspicious. {7}
