Full Description

'A flat topped mound shown on the 1824 ordnance survey map. This may have been either a mill mound or a Roman barrow as it is on the line of King Street - Mareham Lane. From the look of the ground I should think the first alternative is the most likely.' {1} The mound was levelled in January 1953 to prepare the site for the building of a new farm complex. The mound was roughly circular about 50ft in diameter, 5ft 6" high. There was no ditch around it and it stood in its own enclosure which was square with a rectangular projection marked off from rest of field by a hedge and shallow ditch. The Home Guard had dug a shallow slit trench across the top during the Second World War. The bulldozing showed the mound was built mainly of clean stiff grey clay, probably from the nearest pond, overlain by looser stony brown earth, possibly from a farther pond. Among the debris scattered by the bulldozers were modern brick fragments and sherds of 19th century pottery. {2}
