Full Description

PRN 33152 Appears on AP with other indeterminate markings, possibly as drainage channel rather than homestead moat.{1}{2} These are manorial earthworks consisting primarily of pond & inflow ditch. They were probably associated with the predecessor of the present C18 manor house. {1} TWO TRENCHES WERE EXCAVATED TO INVESTIGATE THESE EARTHWORKS. IT IS THOUGHT THAT THEY REPRESENT C17-C18 FORMAL GARDEN FEATURES, INCLUDING A POND, AND A POSSIBLE VIEWING PLATFORM. {4} During a watching brief, a feature aligned east/west was recorded. Its position within the surrounding earthworks indicated that it formed part of the ornamental pond. The feature was set back from the edge of the earthworks, possibly indicating that the pond had shallower areas, perhaps for planting. Post-medieval pottery found in the fills indicates that the pond was in use during the period of the 18th-20th centuries.{6}{7}
