Full Description

The suggested site of an encounter near Belton on 15th [sic] May 1643 between Royalists under Cavendish and Parliamentarians under Cromwell. The area is a level space located between the stream that feeds modern fishponds, and the Belton Park gates. There is more than half a mile between the two points. Belton Parish Register records the burial of three men slain in the fight. The battle was won by the Parliamentarians.{1}{2} Cromwell joined with Lord Willoughby of Parham and Captain Holtham and marched on Grantham on the 11th May 1643. Grantham had been abandoned by the Royalists as it was unfortified and had withdrawn their troops to Newark. The Parliamentarian force quartered around the town of Grantham and rested on Friday 12th May. On Saturday 13th May three distinct incidents took place that in several accounts are confused. Firstly there was a Parliamentarian reconnaissance in force towards Newark. Secondly a part of this force, on returning it its quarters around Grantham, was surprised and captured by a Royalist push from Newark. Thirdly the alerted Parliamentarians counter attacked late in the day towards the evening and had the better of a large skirmish around Belton, forcing the Royalists to withdraw again towards Newark. The scene of the fight may with confidence be placed on the level space more than half a mile in length, between the stream that feeds the modern fishponds, and the park gates. The Belton parish register records the burial of three men slain in the Belton fight on May 13th.{3} In the early hours of 13th May 1643 three troops of cavalry from a force commanded by the Parliamentarian Lord Willoughby of Parham were cut up by a Royalist force under Sir John Henderson and Lieutenant General Charles Cavendish later that evening this Royalist force got the worst of a skirmish at Grantham and withdrew.{4}
