Full Description

Probable Romano-British salt making site, north of Morton Drove and New House Farm, Morton. The site is visible as cropmarks. The cropmarks include two sets of parallel linear ditches (possible drove roads) aligned north-east to south-west, and north-west to south-east that meet and cross at TF 141249. There are also enclosures and a possible ring ditch visible in the area. The site was part of a programme of fieldwalking during the Fenland Project. Surface finds included a large concentration of large briquetage fragments with Romano-British pottery, including amphora, and a small amount of burnt animal bone and stone. The briquetage came from an area of newly ploughed hearths and includes bars and supports. The briquetage and hearths suggest salt making activity on site. The cropmarks of the site are visible in aerial photographs. {1}{2}{3}
