Full Description
St Andrew's Church, Dowsby, is mainly Early English to Perpendicular, almost rebuilt and enlarged in 1864, it retains Norman traces. Parts of an Anglo-Saxon cross with cable moulding are built into the outer north wall of the south aisle. {1}{2}{3}{4}
Church was in normal use in 1965. Four Saxon stones in the east wall of the south aisle are set round a later window. {1}
A parish church dating from the 11th century and restored in 1864. It is built of coursed limestone and ironstone rubble, with limestone ashlar and slate roofs with stone coped gables and cross finials. The 15th century west tower has a polygonal stair turret to south-east. There is a clock below the bell opening on the south side of the tower. The north aisle was rebuilt in the 19th century. The east end of the south aisle was rebuilt in the 19th century embedding four fragments of Anglo-Saxon sculpture with interlace decoration of various designs around a blocked rectangular window. There is a mid 13th century, 3 bay north arcade and a later 13th century south arcade. There is a 19th century tomb recess with a 14th century effigy, possibly of Ethelreda Rigdon under a nodding ogee canopy. The effigy was converted to Elizabethan dress at a later date.
