Full Description

Field walking conducted as part of the Fenland Survey recovered a large quantity of Roman artefacts in this area, including a probable small dispersed hoard of Roman coins. All of the coins were bronze Constantinian issues, mainly of 'Urbs Roma' and 'Constantinopolis'. Thirty three coins were found on 18th November 1982, and a further five coins were found on 14th January 1983. Also recovered during the field walking was a large quantity of Romano-British pottery (including Samian, mortaria and amphora) along with tile, rubble, glass, slag, oyster shells and a possible quern. A soilmark was seen at the site and nearby is a triple-ditched enclosure visible on aerial photographs. This is a large site which appears to represent a Romano-British farmstead, possibly a relatively prosperous and long-lived one. {1}{2}{3} 'In November 1982, and again in January 1983, Roman coins were found on a field surface at Pointon by Mr. P. Hayes of the Fenland Survey. The range and condition of the coins, 38 in all, suggest that they formed all or part of a hoard, probably disturbed in ditch-clearing. The hoard consists of half-folles of Constantine I and his sons, 'Constantinopolis' and 'Urbs Roma' commemorative issues (330 - 337 AD), and a single 'Genio Pop Rom' issue of Licinius (314 - 315 AD), and on this evidence a date of deposit in the late 330s is likely. Most of the coins are of the usual western mints of Trier, Arles, and Lyons, with a single London issue, but a 'Constantinopolis' issue of Thessalonica is worthy of notice.' {4}
