Full Description
Sempringham is mentioned in the Domesday Survey and later records. The population was probably reduced by the Black Death (see 32880 for plague pits). When the Sempringham priory was founded the whole village is said to have entered the monastery. {3}
Ploughing has produced Anglo-Saxon stamped ware and medieval pottery. Part of the head of a small Anglo-Saxon brooch was found on the site of the Priory TF105324 as well as a spindle whorl. Aerial photographs show soil or cropmarks at approximately TF106328. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
The area is under plough. No earthworks are evident, but there is a heavy scatter of green glaze ware, other medieval potsherds and building stone. The present location of the brooch and spindle whorl could not be determined. {1}
The head of a Anglo-Saxon brooch was found in the area of the priory and seen at Lincoln Museum in 1962 together with a spindle whorl. {8}
Ploughing at Sempringham DMV site reported to have produced Anglo-Saxon stamped sherds as well as normal medieval pottery. In 1965 H Healey collected medieval pottery from the site. {9}{10}
Geophysical survey and aerial photograph interpretation revealed many features related to the village, helping to show the layout and extent of the settlement. Finds relating to the village were also recovered during fieldwalking. {13}
