Full Description

[Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This two storey timber framed house dates to the 16th or early 17th century. It has a jetty which has been partially underbuilt in stone and a 19th century shop front. There is a low rear wing, also timber framed but partially rebuilt in stone, which may be of similar date to the main range. The interior includes a plain early 19th century staircase. The roof has original beams. {1} This house dates to the early 17th century [this is probably incorrect - see above]. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} The street front has a jetty running for the full length and exposed timber framing on the first floor. The internal floor level is 18 inches below the current street level. {3}{4} A portion of the rear wall was demolished to make way for an extension. The wall was of rubble around 600mm thick and was probably contemporary with building, which is probably 16th or early 17th century. In the wall were a key (ST2637.2) and part of a ledger slab (2637.1) {5} A historic building survey was conducted on the former outbuildings and extensions to the rear of the property. The survey comprised a basic descriptive account and photograph record of all of the outbuildings in the survey area. The rear wing of 8 St Mary's Hill, which post-dates the rest of the building; run plaster ceiling cornices and large sash windows on the first floor point to a likely Georgian date. Further west is an outbuilding that originally was free-standing but has since been subsumed into the main building. Both are of limestone rubble, with pitched gabled roofs of slate. The upper storey of the former outbuilding is brick, suggesting it may originally have been single storey. Joining the two outbuildings is a probable former Victorian laundry, with a brick-built copper in the east wall. It appears to originally have been L-shape in plan, constructed of limestone rubble with large quoins at the northwest corner, later extended in brick to match the width of the rest of the building. {6}{7}
