Full Description

PRN 30650 The current church building dates from 1836 and was designed by the architect John Brown of Norwich in an Early English style. It has a Norman arch in the undercroft, beneath the tower. It is not in ecclesiastical use. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The medieval church stood on the same site. It stood until 1832, however little is known about its fabric. It is mentioned in 12th century and later documents, however its foundation date is unknown. It belonged to Crowland Abbey until the Dissolution, when it passed to the Cecil family. {2} Although the church was rebuilt in the early 19th century, some fragments of medieval fabric remain in a vault beneath the west tower. However, these may possibly have come from a different church (they are very similar to some from St Paul's church). {3} The church was rebuilt after the older building collapsed as a result of attempted renovations in 1832. The new church was designed by John Brown in a 13th century style and the foundation stone was laid on 12th May 1835. It was officially opened on 19 October 1836. The bells date from 1762. The interior contains numerous monuments and brasses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a few earlier ones. {4} The church was declared redundant in 1974. In 1982 it was converted into shops in an 'unsympathetic' and 'appalling' conversion, however this did retain the shell of the building almost intact. {5}
