Full Description

PRN 30644 In 922 'King Edward marched with his army to Stamford and had a fortress built on the S side of the River.' {1} Evidence for the position of the burh is tenuous, but one possible position shown on plan, this receives reinforcement from discovery of ditch antedating Saxo Norman quarry on its E side. {2} AN EVALUATION IN 1992 REVEALED A DITCH, WHOSE POSITION AND ALIGNMENT SUGGESTS THAT IT MIGHT BE THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY OF THE SAXON BURGH (SEE 34878). {5}
