Full Description

PRN 30603 This is a 13th century foundation, with much alteration in around 1450. It was the chapel of the Order of the Garter prior to Windsor. {1}{2} It is situated at the east end of St George's Square with a triangular burial ground around it. The earliest reference to a church on this site is 1199, although it is suggested that this may be one of the Pre-Conquest foundations. {3} Stained glass in this church, some of which is in situ, dates to the late 14th-15th centuries.{4} This building dates from the 13th century, with much alteration carried out around 1450. The chancel and clerestory were built in the 15th century for William de Bruges, the first Garter King of Arms, and the church was the chapel of this order prior to its move to Windsor. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5}{9} A very detailed description of the church including its fittings, bells and monuments is given in the RCHME Stamford volume. {6}
