Full Description

Prehistoric to medieval settlement was revealed and destroyed by surface ironworkings at different times since 1882 along a strip of land about 1 mile long and a quarter to a half a mile wide on either side of Sewstern Lane, where it divides Woolsthorpe and Denton. Saxon (probably Pagan) cinerary urns, spearheads, two Aberg's group IV fibulae, iron shield bosses, brass rings and buckles and glass beads found. The fibulae came from Brewer's graveyard (a suicide's grave). Extended inhumations, oriented north and south, have also been found. Spearheads and fibulae are in Grantham Museum. {5} A SERIES OF CINERARY URNS, SPEARHEADS, BROOCHES, BRASS RINGS, BUCKLES, GLASS BEADS AND SHIELD BOSSES... 'WERE FOUND NEAR BRIDGE.... THERE IS NO TRACE WHATEVER OF ANY PERMANENT BUILDING'. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} 'Mixed cemetery of 1885 during ironstone working. Numerous cinerary urns, broken pottery, weapons, brass rings, and buckles, glass beads...as fibulae. These fibulae were found in the Brewer's Gravefield...and consist of a pair...each of 5 and a half inches, one of 4 inches and one of 2 and a quarter inches, all of massive brass (Cruciform brooches). There were also 2 flat circular thin brass fibulae c.1.5 inches diameter with pins belonging to them, but detached.' {7}
