Full Description

Medieval house, owned by Hall family in the 15th century. Seems to have been rebuilt in the 16th century, and has later alterations. {1} The building dates from the 14th century, but was remodelled 2 centuries later. Bears datestone 1574, with much architectural detail of this period, but no earlier remains identified. The south side is of the 18th century. {2}{3} The building was acquired by the National Trust in 1944. {4} 14th century stone house, remodelled and added to in the 16th century (the chimney stack dates to 1574). The south front was redesigned c.1735. The house was once called Hall Place, after the Hall family who lived there. It was the home of Arthur Hall, the Elizabethan translator of 'The Iliad'. The garden wall, which contains a 13th century doorway, is also listed.
