Full Description

A 17th or 18th century dovecote approximately 50m west of the school. It is built of coursed stone, is brick lined with brick quoins and string courses. The gable ends have stone coping. The roof has fallen in. The tithe Award marks it as Dovehouse Close. There are only 2 walls left standing as they form the boundary of the woodyard. There is evidence of an older door in the south wall; it is blocked and the existing door may be a later insertion. {1} Little now remains of the pigeoncote in the estate yard, erected in the 18th century. {2} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3} The pigeoncote is now a roofless ruin with just two adjacent walls standing – the south and west walls. Outside the west wall are two lean-to structures. An archive photograph of the pigeoncote taken from the south, before it fell into ruin, shows that it had a gable walls to the west and east with stone-coped gable parapets, a pantile roof and lantern in the centre of the ridge; the original square structure is clear. The brick quoins are clearly visible which indicate it was originally a stand-alone structure, which was later adapted and added to, once it ceased to be used as a pigeoncote. The two surviving standing walls of the pigeoncote consist of stone-faced brick walls with niches built into the brickwork on the inside to create nesting sites for the pigeons. The niches contain bedded pantiles forming a concave nesting area within the holes. {4}{5}
