Full Description

The site of the hamlet of Towthorpe. {1} There is no obvious village site. Aerial photographs show areas of ridge and furrow that do not reach the stream so there are possible areas of settlement here. {2} The area is rough pasture with, immediately to the south, a more disturbed area with drainage ditches but no obvious evidence for buildings. {3}{4} A geophysical survey on the site, conducted in 2020 prior to river improvement works, revealed a group of possible rectilinear features. These included a ridge and furrow headland, a group of small rectangular enclosures that may represent the remains of tofts, and a possible animal pen to the east of the river, as well as field divisions or terracing associated with the settlement on both sides of the river. {5}
