Full Description

Post-medieval structures were revealed when excavations were made to reveal the north-western corner of the Roman town defences. Large circular foundations, 17 feet in diameter, survived to 3.5 feet in height. A circular platform of yellow clay was revetted by a limestone wall. Early 17th century pottery was found within this, suggesting that the remains date to shortly after 1600. Dove bones were also discovered inside. Stukeley records a dovecote in this area in 1720s. {1}
