Full Description

A relief sculpture of 3 mother goddesses was discovered in 1831, in the south-east corner of Ancaster graveyard. The sculpture is 1 foot 7 inches long, 1 foot 4 inches high, and shows all 3 goddesses seated. It was found standing upright, facing south, on top of a stone block, at one end of a 6 feet by 4 feet stone slab. At the south end of the slab was a small altar, 1 foot high by 5 feet wide, which was set on a stone disc, on top of a stone column, on a stone block. C.W.Phillips wrote (22/3/30) ‘The famous stone group of the deae matres was found in the churchyard in 1831. A small incense altar was found standing before the sculptured slab. The sculptures are now in Grantham Museum.’ More fragments of relief sculpture were found in 1960, during construction at the east wall of the church. 2 small fragments of relief sculpture were found built into the wall: one of 1 head and one of 2 heads. These are owned privately by a Miss B. in Sudbrook. One shows the right side of a single head under a fragment of gable. The eyes are bulging, the lids are heavily modelled, and the hair is parted in the centre and swept back in exaggerated curls. They are all probably part of the same carving, but do not fit together. See Antiquaries Journal XLI, page 230 and plate XL. An altar was discovered in October 1961, during the digging of a grave in the churchyard. The altar was inscribed 'DEO VIRIDIO TRENKO ARCVM FECIT DESVODON'. It is now in Lincoln Museum. A sculpture of a life size torso with drapery was discovered in 1963, during grave digging. The sculpture had been re-used as a grave slab for a mid 2nd century burial. {1}{2}{3}{4}
