Full Description

Remains of a former medieval gatehouse, incorporated into the fabric of a barn at Church Farm, Corby Glen. {1}{2} Barn largely dating from the 18th century, with 19th and 20th century alterations, but also incorporates masonry from a former medieval gatehouse. Built of ashlar stone and squared and coursed limestone rubble, and features a pantile roof. Of two storeys, with an irregular three bay front having off-centre planked 19th century door, and with two fixed lights above; one 20th century and the other in a chamfered stone surround, with three breathers. To the right is a projecting coped buttress and an area of earlier masonry. The right hand angle is chamfered and the lower part of the gable is of good massive ashlar. To the right hand side of the gable are five stones of an octagonally moulded respond. This part is thought to have probably been part of an entrance gatehouse or structure to Corby Castle which lies immediately to the north. {3}{4} A site visit by English Heritage staff in February 2003 identified that the medieval masonry comprised the whole of the south wall of the barn and an area extending as far north as the north side of the door in the west wall. {5}
