Full Description

Medieval market cross, comprised of three steps, base and shaft measuring 6' 6" high, with moulding and pedestal supporting a ball. The ball is of later date and the whole monument appears to have been restored at some point. {1}{2}{3} Limestone market cross dating from the 14th century, with 18th and 20th century alterations. The cross is believed to stand in or near to its original position, and is comprised of a medieval octagonal base, surmounted by a square shaft, on top of which ia a late 17th century capital and ball finial. The base has three steps, which have been faced with blue Victorian bricks, and show evidence of repairs with iron clamps in some places. On the upper step rests the socket-stone, a plain limestone slab of square section with chamfered corners. Set into the socket-stone is the shaft, which is square in section at the base rising over 1.95m through chamfered corners in slightly tapering octagonal section. Both the socket-stone and shaft are believed to be medieval. The shaft terminates in a moulded and chamfered knop of square section. Above is the head, composed of a short pedestal of square section, similar in width to the shaft, topped by a stone ball. The knop and head are believed to be late 17th century in date. The full height of the cross is about 3.5m. The monument has been designated as both a Scheduled Monument and a Listed Building; for the full description and the legal address, please refer to the appropriate entries in the National Heritage List for England. {4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}
