Monument record MLI30027 - Three Undated, Probably Saxon Burials, at the site of a Roman Bathhouse
Summary
At least three burials were recorded within the footprint of a Roman bathhouse.
Type and Period (1)
- BURIAL (Early Medieval/Dark Age - 410 AD to 1065 AD)
Protected Status/Designation
- None recorded
Full Description
The remains of at least three individuals were recorded within the footprint of a Roman bathhouse (MLI30020), and although the grave cuts were damaged the presence of unstratified remains may be suggestive of further burials. While no dating evidence was present within the cuts, their being deliberately cut through the tiled Roman floor is suggestive of a similar Saxon date to the examples from the nearby villa (MLI30018, MLI30019).
At least one of the individuals is believed to have been a mature male, the second shows evidence for advanced age through bone-wear, with an immature or young female also present.
