Full Description
Two inhumation burials found within discrete features were excavated in 1948-1949 by J.T. Smith, dated through pottery to approximately the 6th century.
The western-most burial was identified in the exact centre of a room associated with the Roman villa on the site, with the excavated evidence suggesting that at least the floor of the building was intact at the point at which the grave was dug indicating a deliberate reuse of the early feature. A complete but broken pot was interred with the individual, and the grave was capped with rubble. The second grave had been disturbed by the excavation work, although it was found to occupy the former hearth of the Roman villa. Both individuals appear to have been male.
It seems likely further human remains were present on the site although the records of the finds are unclear. The 1948-1949 excavations may have identified “a fragment of a lower jaw and metapodial fragment found among the unstratified bones scattered about the site” although no further details are given about the unstratified material, and Stukeley’s 1727 excavations found “some human bones…[and] many bones of a hand” {2}.
