Full Description
Excavations in 1968 on the old town tunnel at Holbeach Market Hill exposed the remains of what was thought to be a medieval bridge. The bridge would have crossed the former Holbeach river, which flowed roughly north to south through the town at this point. {1}{2}
The Town Tunnel was the name given to the 19th century engineering works that constrained the former river, channelling it underground through the town centre. The 1968 excavation and repair works were prompted after an inspection visit conducted earlier that year revealed several structural issues within the tunnel, raising concerns of possible collapse in the Market Hill area. A photograph taken during the initial inspection may show the remains of the former medieval bridge, incorporated into the tunnel. The photograph shows the underside of an arch made of stone blocks, with the brick-built sewer system continuing beyond. If this is the former bridge, then its dimensions may have been roughly 8.5ft wide, by 7.5ft high. The inspection works also recorded the presence of an old well in this area, close to the remains of the bridge. {3}{4}
