Full Description

According to a workman, the disarticulated human skeletons of at least six individuals (judging from the skulls) were found during the rebuilding of the former Russell Alan shop on Bridge Street, below the cellar floor. One had severe arthritis in the spine. A few clay pipes were also found. Human remains have been found all over Bridge Street in the past - it is the presumed site of Spalding Priory burial ground.{1} During trial trenching, three burials were recorded cutting into a buried soil dated to the 12th/13th centuries, located in the rear cellar of 19 Bridge Street. Two of the inhumations were aligned east-west; the alignment of the third was not ascertained. The first grave was only partly exposed and contained an inhumation. The second grave contained a pelvis and femur visible in section. The third grave was also only partly exposed, and only foot bones were visible. No further information on the skeletal remains was available.{3}{4} When combined with previous discoveries of human remains along Bridge Street and Market Place, these remains indicate the existence of a substantial cemetery within the limit of Spalding Priory.{3}{4}
