This site was excavated in 1913, though no report was produced. Pottery recovered during the excavation is thought to be in the Museum of Spalding Gents Society, and includes two sherds classified by Hawks as Iron Age 'A', probably from an old land surface. The rest of the pottery was examined by G. Dunning and was dated to between the 11th and 18th centuries. The evidence of pottery and former existence of the mound is suggestive of a motte. The mound and a possible outer ditch show as soilmarks on aerial photography. {1}{2}{3} In Spalding Museum are some finds obtained during an excavation of this mound - pieces of Romano-British coarse black and grey pot, some glazed medieval ware, pig and sheep bones, human tibia, an oyster shell and some charcoal. This may be a medieval site, superimposed on Romano-British occupation (CWP 27.3.31). The pottery was seen at Lincoln Museum in September 1954. It is not Romano-British, but apparently late Saxon, in two groups: 1) Hand-made vessels, simple rims, Shelly ware. 2) Wheel-made pots, Thetford types, grey sandy ware and fine glazed sherds in cream ware, one with stamp. F.H.T. {4}{5} The site is marked on an old map as 'Tumulus'. It was evidently a considerable mound, but no moat was mentioned. It was excavated in September 1912. An account of the excavation appears in the Spalding Gents Society Minute Book, 1913. H. Hallam considers it the site of the original manor of the De Moulton family. The pottery from the site is noted as possibly Iron Age, Saxon and as late 15th century. The pottery was later seen by H. Healey in 1972: The assemblage includes Shelly, Stamford, Torksey-Thetford type, and Bourne A cooking opt. One rare Stamford stamp. {6}
