Full Description

All Saints' Hospital, Holbeach, for warden and fifteen poor persons, founded by Sir John of Kirton, 1351. It had ceased to exist by 1545, before suppression of chantries and hospitals. William Stukeley, born at Holbeach in 1687, considered the site near the church where the Chequers Inn stands. He remembered the remains of an ancient building, with carved stonework, arched doorways and mullioned windows being taken down by his father. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The Chequers Inn (at TF 3591 2484) is wholly 18th-20th century in date. No adjacent buildings appear earlier. {1} See also MLI81820.
