Full Description
Late Decorated, much restored when foundations of the church mentioned in 1177 were discovered beneath the three west piers of the north arcade. The round towers of the north porch either came from a castle, or are an imitation of castle architecture.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
In normal use. The drum towers of the north porch appear to be a late addition to the porch proper. No local information regarding their origin. {1}
THERE ARE TWO MEDIEVAL STONE COFFINS OUTSIDE THE CHURCH. {7}
THE CHURCH WHICH IS MENTIONED IN 1177 WAS REPLACED BY A LATER CHURCH, WHICH WAS LARGELY BUILT BY THE BISHOP OF LINCOLN IN THE 1340'S. A FREE GRAMMAR SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED DURING THE REIGN OF EDWARD III (1327-1377) AND PROBABLY FORMED PART OF THE CHURCH. {8}
Stained glass in this church dates to the 14th-15th centuries.{9}
During a watching brief on cable trenches in the churchyard, two features were recorded. An undated brick structure was thought to be the foundations of a tomb chest. A linear feature, also undated, corresponded in position to a path across the churchyard shown on a depiction of the church dated 1836. A scatter of 14th to early 20th century pottery and two 17th to 18th century clay pipe stems were also recovered.{10}{11}
